Veena Chandra -Indian Classical Sitar and Tsuna Sakamoto – Viola Collaboration
Veena Chandra – American Indian Classical Musician Sitar player ,composer, educator and Tsuna Sakamoto -Violist composer ,educator with National Symphony Orchestra since 1998 . In this collaboration Veena and Tsuna will create several New Compositions together. Since both are educators they will do two workshops Fall 2020 and they will perform In Spring 2021 both will take place at Arthur Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College ,Saratoga Springs ,NY. Performance will be audio, video recorded and also it will be live streamed in order to share with broader audience, both plan to create a CD as well.
Tsuna was introduced to Veena through one of her student last year. AlthoughTsuna is based in Washington DC area but frequently talking and sharing music with each other has become inevitable for both. They are very appreciative of each other’s music and music ability.Both have traveled Nationally and Internationally to share their music with world. Both are craving to create New Music together.
This collaboration is bringing world musician of different traditions, different age and different genre together.Veena Indian Classical Sitar player, composer educator 75 years old ,mother of 6 children and Tsuna born in Japan in her 40’s ,accelerating in Western Classical Music -Viola Both have achieved acclaimed success as woman musicians
This is very inspiring for other women musicians and mothers across the globe. It’s been challenging for Veena to raise 6 children solely and continue to educate and perform keep her heritage and promote Indian Classical Music. Tsuna has excelled in Viola and she is continuing to perform as active Chamber player as well as passionate teacher she maintains private studio.She is artistic staff of American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, she has been faculty of the CatholicUniversity of America and University of Maryland, has given master classes in Universities and High Schools.
Veena teaches at Skidmore since 1990 and Williams colleges since 2014 and Founder of Dance and Music School of India 1987 in Latham. NY, Veena has continuously done master classes, workshops ,and residences and performances at elementary-schools,middle schools, High schools colleges and universities, libraries and parks and farmers markets to name a few.
Sitar and Viola share a unique timbre ,both projecting infinite variations across the musical spectrum as well as upon the ears of the audience.The Viola of Tsuna Sakamoto has been heard around the world ,beauty of her versality have been played in orchestra and solo. She has singular unique gift of empathy of note and tone. Veena Chandra through her Sitar brings rich,mystical sound to the stage in a transcendence that uniquely touches the souls of the audience.
East and West musical theme transcendent would delight scholars of music, patrons of artsand music students for generation.
This project will require several meetings and rehearsals We will Skype and meet several hours to compose this music .Tsuna will travel to Skidmore to rehearse ,for workshops and performance. She will stay with me for rehearsals and practices. We will plan 10 sessions in person several Skypes.
