Walk to the Beat

Walk to the Beat, a World Percussive Music and Dance Festival

The Latest Update

Performance of the commission at Walk to the Beat 2015

Posted on October 8, 2015 by Anna de la Paz

Well, we did it!  July 18, 2015 was an exciting day in Nyack, NY.  The streets were filled with the sounds and spirit of world percussion at the Walk to the Beat Festival.  Musicians and dancers played for hours and hours on the main stages, and as wandering musicians throughout the village.  At the end of the day, the crowd gathered at Memorial Park where we performed our New Music USA commission.  The group, Making Music Dance had spent months preparing this special piece with guest artists, Thanos Daskalopoulos (body percussion and tap) and Sarah Ratcliff (steel pan, body percussion).  In the end, we were very happy with the work, and we hope to continue experiencing the music and watching it evolve.  I will leave you with a brief clip from the festival…just a teaser.  We are hoping to get a professional video soon.

Posted on March 17, 2015 by Anna de la Paz

On July 18th, the streets of Nyack, New York will be singing, dancing and playing to the pulse of various forms of world music.

The Walk to the Beat Summer Festival is a one-of-a-kind event bringing together musicians and dancers in a day of improvisation and collaboration.

The festival is approaching its third year and needs your help to stay vibrant and healthy. Can you help me and the Walk to the Beat team make this year’s festival the best yet?

We’ve just launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo and can really use your help.

You can make a contribution at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/walk-to-the-beat-2015-summer-festival/x/5992038(We greatly appreciate every donation – no amount is too small.)

Another way to support Walk to the Beat is spreading the word! By sharing Walk to the Beat and its Indiegogo campaign with just 5 of your friends your are helping us to highlight world-class talent in the Nyack community.

We can’t tell you enough how much we appreciate your support and we really hope to see you in July!

Overview

What is Walk to the Beat:

Walk to the Beat is a full day event, free to the public, with percussive world music and dance performances in venues all over Nyack, NY, a village 17 miles north of NYC.   We run four main stages, with the equivalent of twenty hours of programming; the Nyack Center (our main sponsor) and the village’s community center,  the gazebo on Main Street, the garden of the Edward Hopper House and Grace Church. All four venues are historically significant to the community.  As well, the Memorial Park Gazebo located right on the bank of the Hudson River, will be used for large, hands-on, participatory events like drum circles, square dances and jam sessions.  We are currently forming a partnership with Rivertown Films, a local not for profit, to add an element of film to the festival. We are particularly excited to be adding a partnership with Grace Church this year as this will significantly increase the footprint of the festival and it will offer an opportunity to broaden our demographic.  There are a number of beautiful performance spaces at Grace, including the garden, the sanctuary and Bradley Chapel.

What makes this festival different?

One of the most important aspects of our festival is our wandering artists. There will be 10 – 12 dedicated musicians and dancers hired specifically to perform short sets in 12 – 15 pre-determined businesses around the village.  As the artists move from venue to venue, it encourages the public to join them, enjoying the music and dance, but also getting to know and explore Nyack and its businesses. It also gives the artists an opportunity to collaborate with any and all of the other artists.  A great example of this was the “Walk to the Beat” song that was created spontaneously at last year’s festival.   At 6 pm we have a “jam session” in Memorial Park, where everyone is welcome to participate and play music together, artists and public. We are committed to creating an event where the public is invited to experience and play.

The Project:

We want to create a new composition blending physical and aural music to be premiered at the Walk to the Beat Festival, July 18, 2015.  The collaborators would be Thanos Daskalopoulos, from Athens, Greece, body percussionist, singer; and local artists, Sarah Ratcliffl, steel drum, trained in Trinidad; Andy Algire, balafon master, composer, Heather Cornell,  sand dance, wooden taps and balafon, and Anna de la Paz, flamenco, classical Spanish dance and castanets.  Thanos Daskalopoulos will be the physical music director and guest artist for the project and Andy Algire will be the musical director.  Thanos, originally a student of Heather Cornell,  is a rising voice in the international body percussion world and is known for his deeply musical approach to this very traditional artform.  We’re excited  to bring together the unique qualities of each culture and discipline and through this artistic cross-pollination, collaborate on this new composition.   We intend to record the project soon after.
