YDC 2018 Finale Concert
YDC 2018 Finale Concert at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, August 4, 2018
This is the eighth and final concert of the 2018 YDC tour. You will see all original work by the teen dancers, in collaboration with the professional composers. Many of the composers attended the finale concert. It was a wonderful celebration of this tremendous inaugural season of the YDC Choreographer/Composer Project.
YDC Composers perform at Finale Concert

A few of the YDC composer/musicians collaborated with YDC Music Director William Catanzaro on a sound score for our Guest Repertory Project: Jane Comfort. These musicians joined us at various venues on tour to perform live with William for this repertory piece. At the finale concert at Ailey Citigroup Theater, musicians Evan Joseph, Jerome Morris and Bradley Schirmer joined William on stage for this collaboration.

Day 1 of YDC Choreographer / Composer Project
Monday July 2, 2018 at the 92Y
Nine professional composers joined the company of 14 emerging choreographers this past Monday, for an engaging session of listening to music, sharing ideas, asking questions, and developing artistic relationships. The room was electric with ideas. Attached are a few videos and photos from the session.
Next step, pairing the composers and choreographers, who will begin to collaborate on creating an original dance, with an original piece of music. Rehearsals begin Thursday July 5th, at the Fieldston School. Our first performance is Wednesday July 25th!

Overview
Young Dancemakers Company, entering its 23rd season in 2018, is a tuition-free summer ensemble of New York City high school teens, who audition for and enroll in the program with the goal of creating their own original choreography and performing it in free public concerts throughout the boroughs of NYC.
Our purpose, in applying to New Music USA, is to fold original music into the season, giving the young choreographers the opportunity to collaborate with composers on the creation of the music and the dance. Through this process the young choreographers will be led away from danced imitation of recorded music, and led toward the creative partnership of the dance and the music, each reinforcing the other.
The upcoming 2018 season marks the initiation of this exciting Choreographer/Composer collaborative Project.
The company is yet to be formed via auditions in March of 2018. We anticipate a company of approximately 16 dancers. We will create a concert of ten original dances by New York City teens, with original music, and present it in free performances at venues throughout New York City, from July 25th to August 4th, 2018. The performance venues will include Kumble Theater, Symphony Space, Ailey Citigroup Theater, Flushing Town Hall, the Fieldston School, Harlem School of the Arts, University Settlement and the 92Y. Each choreographer will be paired with a composer. In the interest of expedience, most if not all of the music will be recorded.
We are applying to New Music USA to enable us to pay each composer a commissioning fee. The working process will include several one-on-one sessions for each pair of collaborators, and rehearsals as needed, in addition to phone and email communication. The project is being curated by YDC Music Director William Catanzaro. The collaborative process will be guided and mentored by Mr. Catanzaro, along with YDC Director Alice Teirstein and Associate Director Jessica Gaynor. The goal is to give our teen choreographer/dancers an understanding and appreciation of the part original music can play in their choreographic work.
Project Media
These are two pieces from the YDC 2016 season. “Support” is a duet about a blind woman and her caretaker. “Lief:Love” is a group dance about a budding relationship between two teens within their community. These are examples of the type of original works we strive for at YDC, topical and completely original. YDC Music Director William Catanzaro worked with each emerging choreographer to find music that supported the dance. This summer the process will be to collaborate with a composer throughout the process of creating an original dance.
This is Jerome Morris’s SoundCloud page. Jerome is one of ten composers committed to collaborating with one of ten emerging choreographers in Young Dancemakers Company between June 29 and August 4, 2018. Each composer brings a unique background and perspective to music composition and collaboration. Under the mentorship and guidance of the YDC Directors, each composer will work directly with a YDC choreographer to create an original piece of music for their dance. The resulting pieces will be performed in eight free concerts citywide.
